Virtualizing your Domain Controller

In modern organizations each employee has access to a computer and organizational resources such as documents, projects and other important information. Deploying a effective security policy for access control is mandatory to ensure the confidentiality of corporate information.

The best practices point to ACL (Access Control List) policy basis to enforce the access control of the organization resources and information. Currently, the most common way to do that in a conventional network is deploying a Domain Controller with Group Policies.

Main Goals

When we virtualize a Domain Controller with File sharing integration we must ensure:

  • Domain Controller, compatible with Windows®, MAC® and GNU/Linux® computers
  • LDAP/Active Directory® users and groups
  • Kerberos Security Policies
  • Seamless integration with file sharing
  • Live-Backups, without needing to shutdown the Domain Controller
  • It's desirable a cost effective solution without user CALs (Client Access Licensing) since this is the main constraint in nowadays economy.

How do we recommend to do it

In order to provide a full Domain Controller solution without user CALs you can use our V-Controller Virtual Appliance Know more here

V-Controller is a integrated Domain Controller, perfectly integrated with Windows® Domain Controller standards that can give you network logon control, security policies (GPO) and can also be integrated with File Sharing servers such as CAMEL Virtual Storage.

This Domain Controller is provided in a Virtual Appliance on the VIRTUALIZER® market and it is already pre-configured. You can deploy your Domain using Microsoft tools Know More About Microsoft but you don't need a Microsoft® Windows Server, you just need the V-Controller.

You should make sure that:

  • You must have VIRTUALIZER® support in order to have access to V-Controller and CAMEL appliances for free (Know more here)
  • Ensure that your Virtual disk is enabled with Virtual HDD driver (VirtIO Driver) when imported (instead of IDE or SCSI)
  • Activate the Automatic Live-Backups on your VIRTUALIZER® fusion
  • Configure a CAMEL Virtual Storage appliance for file sharing (know more about CAMEL Virtual Storage)

Explaining the fundamentals

You can virtualize your Domain Controller on your VIRTUALIZER® fusion. First you need to have support contract for your VIRTUALIZER® in order to have access to the Market Appliances. With that, you can request your Virtual Appliances. You will need a V-Controller and a CAMEL Virtual Storage.

The V-Controller Appliance will allow you to configure a full-featured Domain Controller compatible with Windows®, GNU/Linux and MAC clients. You can not only configure users and groups on the integrated Active Directory service but also define GPO (Group Policy Objects) to enforce the security policies of your organization.

The CAMEL Virtual Storage will allow you to have file sharing on your network. This Virtual Storage can be configured to integrate with the Active Directory present in the V-Controller in order to access to Users and Group accounts on your Domain.

Basically, you will use the V-Controller to manage your Domain and enforce security policies on the computers and use CAMEL Virtual Storage to share files on the network.

One of the most advantages of VIRTUALIZER® fusion is the capability to allow the Virtual Machine to directly use the physical hard drive present on the server. Instead of using a file based Virtual Disk (such as VMDK, VHD, IMG, etc) it will use, not the entire disk, but a specific "virtual partition" called Raw Logical Volume. You can manage your Raw Logical Volumes as you can manage any other Data Store. This is an important feature since it allows you to have Virtual Disks with TaraBytes without loosing performance and minimizing the data loss probability in disaster scenarios.

With this architecture your solution will be more secure and cost effective.

Your benefits are:

  • Cost effective solution without user CALs
  • Virtual Domain
  • Virtual Storage and file sharing
  • 100% integrated with Windows Server management tools.
  • Easy configuration and fast deploy
  • Compatible with Windows®, GNU/Linux® and MAC® clients
  • Run more than one Operating System on the same hardware at the same time
  • Less energy needed to power up the server
  • Less energy needed to power up the Cooling systems
  • Better performance, with the faster virtualized disk I/O
  • Better security, using backups of the entire system
  • Lower downtime, with Live-Backups functionality that allow yous to backup your VOIP PBX without shutdowns
